(Acoustic) pain threshold
The pain threshold is a medical and acoustic term that indicates the lower threshold of a stimulus that is perceived as painful by a person. If this stimulus is increased further, the intervention threshold is reached. This is the threshold at which the person affected does something about the pain. Where the pain threshold lies is highly individual and is influenced by various factors, such as anxiety or stress.Acoustically speaking, the pain threshold is reached when a sound is perceived as unpleasantly loud. The acoustic pain threshold limits the upper limit of the auditory surface, while the lower limit is defined by the hearing threshold.
